Who Owns Mercedes-Benz?

2020 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Cabriolet

Drivers across the world know Mercedes-Benz as a leading automaker that creates some of the industry’s most iconic and luxurious sedans, SUVS, coupes, and sports cars. Each vehicle is designed to the highest standards to create whole new benchmarks in everything from performance to technology, but have you ever wondered who owns Mercedes-Benz?

It’s a surprisingly common query, so we thought we’d bring you up to speed with a quick rundown of Mercedes-Benz history.

Who Owns Mercedes-Benz Corporation?

The Mercedes-Benz Corporation itself is a division of Daimler AG. That’s not a name you’ll hear as frequently across Princeton or Hamilton, but it’s a much larger German automaker than Mercedes-Benz alone. They’re located in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and their ownership of Mercedes-Benz isn’t new. In fact, they’ve owned it since 1926, back when the brand was called “Daimler-Benz.”

Oh, and who owns Mercedes-Benz stadium? Contrary to what you might think, it isn’t Daimler AG or Mercedes-Benz. The home of the NFL Atlanta Falcons and MLS Atlanta United is owned by the state of Georgia.

When Was Mercedes-Benz Founded?

The Mercedes-Benz brand itself can be traced back to the late 1800s, when Karl Benz invented the Benz Patent Motorwagen. It was the first gas-powered automobile, but it wasn’t until 25 years had passed that Mercedes-Benz became the brand and automaker we know today. That happened in 1926, when Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler merged their automaking under “Daimler-Benz.”
