How Much Can You Deduct?
When it comes to vehicles that are strictly for business use, the IRS has specific rules about what can and can’t qualify for a deduction. The good news is that in many cases, the Sprinter is able to easily qualify alongside the Mercedes-Benz Metris. But how much can you deduct, and how do you go about writing them off?
The short answer is that under the IRS Tax Code section 179, you are allowed to deduct the full purchase price from your gross income of any business equipment, tools, software, vehicles, and assets that would lose value due to depreciation up to a maximum of $1.16 million in 2023. However, the asset must be used at least 50% of the time for your business purposes in order to qualify.
In addition to this, there is a Bonus Depreciation which according to the IRS, “bonus depreciation allows business taxpayers to deduct additional depreciation for the cost of qualifying business property, beyond normal depreciation allowances. It’s intended to spur capital purchases by all business taxpayers, small, mid-sized and large.” This value beginning in January 2023 until January 2024 is 80%, and will continue to decrease by 20% until 2027.
