Mercedes-Benz USA Breaks Ground

This summer at Mercedes-Benz of Princeton and at Mercedes-Benz facilities around the world, our slogan “the best or nothing” is ringing true.

On July 27, United States Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and several other notable dignitaries broke ground on the new $500 million dollar Mercedes-Benz USA Sprinter manufacturing plant in North Charleston, SC.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has seen five years of record growth in the Mercedes-Benz lineup and continues to see an increase in sales this year. The Sprinter, along with the Metris, are currently produced in Düsseldorf, Germany, disassembled, and then shipped to the North Charleston plant for reassembly.

The new production facility will provide jobs for up to 1,300 employees in addition to creating 400 additional jobs with local suppliers and will be located adjacent to the existing Sprinter and Metris assembly building.

Establishing local Sprinter production in the United States is only logical. With this new plant we take a big leap into the future production of Mercedes-Ben Vans. This factory will be one of the most advanced automotive plants in North America and will allow us to continue to meet our customers’ changing needs. – Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans

Mercedes-Benz USA Vans announced that the Metris Worker cargo and passenger vans would be joining the Sprinter Worker cargo van, giving customers more options. The Metris features a 2.0-liter V4 paired with a 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission that generates 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque and is available in white, silver, or black. The upcoming Sprinter will boast a new chassis, a 3.0-liter V6 BlueTEC® turbo diesel engine, and roomier body configurations with as much as 486.5 cu.-ft. of cargo space.

To provide additional features, Mercedes-Benz USA Vans has partnered with Knapheide, Auto Truck Group, and SmartLiner as a part of its new MasterSolutions program to provide vocational solutions for both models.
