Required Fluid Changes for EVs

While electric vehicles do not need oil, and Hamilton drivers do not need an electric car oil change, electric vehicles do require several different types of fluid changes. These include the following:

  • Brake Fluid: EVs still feature brakes, so make sure your brakes a properly lubricated and that their hydraulic lines have enough fluid to move your calipers!
  • Transmission fluid: Although EVs feature radically different transmissions than combustion engine vehicles, those single-speed transmissions still require adequate levels of fresh transmission fluid to function.
  • Coolant: Coolant is especially important for an EV. After all, your battery generates massive amounts of energy, and its temperature needs to be well regulated.

How EVs Differ From Combustion Engine Vehicles

You know that electric cars do not use oil, but they require coolant, transmission, and brake fluid changes. Now, let’s take a look at how the anatomy of an EV differs from a vehicle with a combustion engine.

  • A gas-powered vehicle uses a combustion engine to propel your vehicle by igniting small and controlled explosions inside of your engine’s combustion chamber.
  • EVs rely on battery power to churn a motor that propels your vehicle further down the streets of Mercer County. Your battery emits a current of electricity into a magnetic field created by magnets placed throughout the motor. These magnets cause the current to churn the motor, which generates the torque that moves your vehicle!
