What is Antifreeze?

Antifreeze is a coolant composed of either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. It’s often orange, pink, or green, and mixed in a solution of 50% water and 50% antifreeze. If you live in a colder climate, you may find more potent 30% water and 70% antifreeze solutions as well! One thing to note is that your vehicle will take a certain color of antifreeze. Most vehicles require green antifreeze, but before you buy antifreeze, consult your owner’s manual in order to determine which color of antifreeze your Hamilton vehicle requires.

What is Antifreeze Used for?

So, now that you know that antifreeze is a coolant and what antifreeze is made of, let’s take a look at what antifreeze is used for. Antifreeze is stored in a tank in your engine bay and is connected to your radiator. Your radiator disperses it via a water pump throughout your engine block to collect heat off of your engine block. The now-hot coolant is returned to your radiator, where the engine heat collected by your antifreeze is cooled off. In essence, antifreeze regulates the temperature of your engine and keeps it from overheating while you drive around Mercer County!

Why is Antifreeze Important?

Antifreeze keeps your engine from overheating. In the event that your engine overheats, it will likely result in catastrophic failure and total your car, so it’s important that you regularly top off your antifreeze. If you live in a colder climate, antifreeze also works to keep your engine block from freezing!
