Tips For How to Unlock a Car Wheel

There aren’t many steps to the process of how to unlock a steering wheel, but there are a few considerations for Hamilton drivers to keep in mind. To unlock a car wheel, you’ll want to turn your key to the “on” position and gently pull the wheel in a number of directions. One of these directions will take your wheel out of the “locked” position. As you do this, remember to:

  • Avoid Force: Don’t try to force the wheel out of its locked position. This can damage components in your steering mechanism. As you experiment with finding the right direction to pull your wheel towards, do so gently and cautiously, wiggling the wheel back and forth until the wheel gives naturally.
  • Try the Ignition: Sometimes, your ignition won’t allow you to turn your key to the “on” position if your wheel is locked. In this case, gently attempt to turn the key to “on” as you cautiously pull the wheel in various directions–once your wheel starts moving out of the lock position, your ignition should give way, allowing your key to turn to “on.”
  • Make a New Key: If none of these works as you attempt to unlock your steering wheel, it’s possible that the teeth on your key could be worn out, in which case, you can reach out to our parts department in Lawrenceville for help.
