TPMS means Tire Pressure Monitoring System. This feature uses sensors to monitor the air pressure in each of your tires. If it detects under- or over-inflation in any of them, a warning light on your dashboard will flash to alert you. Read on to learn more about this helpful feature. How Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System Works

Now that you know what TPMS means, let’s take a closer look at how your monitor works. Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System uses sensors to detect and alert you when the air pressure is too low or high on Hamilton streets. Should it detect improper inflation pressure, it will flash a warning light on your dashboard that most often looks like a flat tire with an exclamation mark. If your tire pressure light comes on, you should promptly inflate your tires at the nearest gas station. Under-inflation can result in:

  • Decreased load carrying capability
  • Poor traction
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Decreased efficiency

Proper Tire Inflation

Properly inflated tires improve your handling, traction, fuel economy, and increase the lifespan of your tires.

  • Lifespan: Proper inflation reduces tread movement. This is because your tire is larger and takes longer to rotate. This means that the rubber on your tires won’t cross the ground as often, reducing wear-and-tear.
  • Efficiency: Proper inflation also reduces roll resistance since your tires will be firmer. This increases fuel economy because your engine doesn’t have to work as hard to propel you.
  • Handling and Traction: Larger, properly inflated tires have increased water dispersion, making them more tractable on wet roads.

If you’re unsure of what the proper PSI for your tires is, consult your owner’s manual.
